Luis Callender is a lighting designer and visual storyteller who trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where he developed a strong foundation in both the artistic and technical dimensions of performance lighting. His work spans theatre, opera, musical theatre, and contemporary performance, shaped by a design approach that blends bold visual composition with a deep sensitivity to narrative and atmosphere.
Luis’s recent design credits include Young Frankenstein and Brighton Rock at the Embassy Theatre, as well as The Welkin at the Courtyard Theatre productions, where his lighting brought clarity, emotional depth, and dynamic visual rhythm to the stage. His growing portfolio reflects a designer with a confident aesthetic and a strong command of how light can sculpt space and guide audience experience.
Alongside his design work, Luis has contributed to a wide range of productions as Head of Lighting, Programmer, and Associate, including Coram Boy, Platonov, Carmen, The Idiot, Merrily We Roll Along, and The Intimacy Test. His technical fluency from programming complex rigs to leading electrics teams allows him to bridge creative vision with practical realisation, making him a valued collaborator in both rehearsal and production environments.
His earlier professional experience includes roles on Kinky Boots (Belgrade Theatre), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Albany Theatre), The Nutcracker (Birmingham Hippodrome), and the For With By International Youth Theatre Festival, giving him a broad understanding of large‑scale touring, musical theatre, and festival work. He has also explored adjacent disciplines such as video design and set design, contributing to his holistic understanding of visual storytelling.
Luis brings a calm, solutions‑driven presence to every creative team, continually exploring new technologies and approaches to expand what light can communicate on stage.
